Staying Connected: What Open Adoption Really Means

One of the most common questions we hear from birthmothers is:

“Will I still hear about my baby after the adoption?”

If you’re thinking about placing your baby for adoption, you might be wondering how much contact you’ll have after placement and how much is even possible. At CFK, we want you to know that you can choose what your post-placement connection looks like. It’s part of your adoption plan, and your preferences matter.

What Are Open Adoption Updates?

In an open adoption, the adoptive family agrees to share updates with you after placement. These updates are based on what you’re comfortable with. There’s no one size fits all version, you get to decide how involved you want to be.

Updates may include:

  • Photos or letters sent on a schedule
  • Emails or texts with small milestones
  • In-person visits throughout the year
  • Ongoing communication through a private channel or app

Open adoption updates can provide peace of mind. Many birthmothers find comfort knowing how their baby is doing, growing, and being loved.

Will Every Family Provide Updates?

Only if you choose a family who agrees. That’s why your adoption plan is so important. From the beginning, you’ll talk with CFK about your preferences. Then, we’ll show you family profiles who are open to the level of contact you want.

We only present families to you that match your wishes.

So if updates are important to you, CFK will help you choose a family who commits to them.

What Do Updates Typically Look Like?

Each birthmother chooses a different update plan, but some common formats include:

Photo + Letter Packages

Some families mail photo books or printed letters around holidays or birthdays. These show milestones, favorite activities, and family life.

Digital Albums

You might receive a private online album or a text message with pictures once every few months. These are often casual and sweet—first day of school, messy face at lunch, or family hikes.

Scheduled Visits

In-person visits are possible with families who agree to them in advance. These might happen once or twice a year in a setting you’re comfortable with.

Shared Journals or Updates

Some adoptive families write regular messages or keep a journal about the child’s progress that’s shared with the birthmother.

What If I Change My Mind About Contact?

It’s okay to change your preferences. You might want more updates or fewer after placement. CFK encourages flexibility in your adoption plan so that your comfort comes first.

If your needs shift, CFK can help you communicate with the adoptive family to adjust the update agreement. Many families are understanding when it comes to respecting the emotions of a birthmother.

Will the Family Stop Sending Updates Over Time?

Most families chosen through CFK understand the importance of consistency. However, life circumstances can sometimes affect the timing or type of updates.

To reduce misunderstandings:

  • CFK helps clarify expectations before placement.
  • Agreements are put in writing (though they aren’t legally binding in Ohio).
  • CFK remains a support system for communication after placement.

You’re not left on your own we’re still here even after the adoption is finalized.

What If the Family Isn’t Following Through?

This can be one of the hardest situations. While most families are trustworthy and committed, there are rare cases where updates don’t come as expected.

If this happens:

  • Reach out to CFK. We’ll help check in with the adoptive family.
  • Talk about your emotions. You’re not alone we’re here to listen.
  • Re evaluate your needs. Sometimes birthmothers decide to reduce expectations for peace of mind, and that’s valid too.

CFK stays available to help navigate tough moments. We don’t disappear after the legal process is over.

FAQs: Open Adoption Updates

  • How often will I get updates?

That depends on the agreement made during your adoption plan. Some birthmothers receive monthly emails, others get annual photo books it’s up to you.

  • Can I ask for updates after placement if I didn’t originally?

Yes, you can. CFK can help reach out and ask the adoptive family if they're open to starting updates even after placement.

  • Will the updates stop when the child gets older?

Not unless it’s part of your agreement. Many families continue updates into childhood and teen years. Some even allow the child to contact the birthmother directly when older.

  • Can I send updates about myself to the adoptive family too?

Absolutely. Some birthmothers write letters or send life updates. If that’s something you want, CFK can help facilitate it.

  • Are open adoption updates legally required in Ohio?

No, they are not legally enforceable. But families selected through CFK are chosen because they genuinely support open adoption, and most stay true to their promises.

You Deserve to Stay Connected

You’ve made a loving and selfless decision. That doesn’t mean you should be shut out. Open adoption updates give you the opportunity to stay emotionally connected in a way that supports your healing.

At CFK, we center your needs not just during placement, but after. If staying in touch matters to you, we’ll help make sure the adoptive family is on the same page.
